A Thanksgiving Meal for Your Soul

Thanksgiving thoughts to place within your hearts!

As you and your family gather around the table this holiday season, stuffing yourself as we all do with more things than we stuff the Thanksgiving turkey remember, that there is only one source of food that will fully suffice us for all eternity. That is "the bread of life that has come from heaven". In the Old Testament when the children of Israel wandered in the desert for 40 years, God sustained his people. Each and every morning, "manna" was given to them by God: to gather, to prepare, and to eat. (God has always provided for us but it does take some effort on our part – He usually doesn't serve us breakfast in bed) This kind of physical food indeed sustains our bodies and is needed daily. God knows that! We pray and he responds – "give us our daily bread".

But in our lives and in our American culture we have made inadequate substitutes in trying to meet our spiritual needs. We seek to fill ourselves with so called "spiritual items" that are lacking in spiritual nutrients as "junk food" is to our physical well being. Jesus says to us in John 6:27, "Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you." Jesus reminds us that it is the same God that cared for and sustained the people of Israel through the wilderness experience that has sent Jesus to us.

Jesus says, "For it is on him (Jesus) that God the Father has set his seal." Jesus reminds us in many other places within the Gospels that many will come and have come and will deceive people. There have been many false prophets and messiahs that have lead and continue to lead people astray. The whole Christmas/Easter story is God's story of Salvation and of Hope. Jesus is God's answer to our problem of human sin. He came at Christmas into the world that he created so that we could see and touch and be touched by God first hand. He died on the cross to pay for our sins, as only he as God could do. The choice then will be up to us to accept the final and complete work of God's love given to us. Or we could choose some cheesy deceiver sent by the devil himself and suffer the eternal consequences.

That happens when we put our trust in ourselves to solve our spiritual problems, in Mother Nature who is a close relative to the "tooth fairy", or any false prophets or messiahs that the devil has conjured up over the eons of time.

Then the people respond as people always respond, "what must we do"? We always think there is something that we must do to earn or capture or take hold of "eternal life". We have to learn that much more! Not by our knowledge are we saved! Not by the work of our hands are we saved. These are the great myths of our culture and every culture since Adam. He thought that eating of the tree of life would make him like God. Knowledge itself is not the answer, it never has been. We can never achieve eternal life by our own human efforts. There is only one way and only one person that the Holy Scriptures clearly point to. That is Jesus Christ and none other. No other name under heaven will suffice for salvation!

Hear Jesus' response from John 6:32 – 35: Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. They said to him, "Sir give us this bread always." Jesus said to them. "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." The answer to our spiritual hunger is eating his body and drinking his blood. Yes we do this spiritually. Salvation is under no other name or person or object than Jesus Christ. The greatest gift from God the Father came as the babe of Bethlehem. He died for us and rose for us on Easter Morning. Put your life in his hands no one else's!

Happy Thanksgiving!
